Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is celebrating its 20th anniversary of helping injured veterans transition back to civilian life. Among the many ways the nonprofit supports veterans and their families is through Warriors to Work, a WWP program that the nonprofit spotlighted on National Hire a Veteran Day 2024.
Observed annually, National Hire a Veteran Day encourages companies and organizations to increase the number of veterans in their workforce. According to the Department of Labor, approximately 200,000 servicemembers leave the military each year. These veterans have the potential to bring to the workforce attributes developed over the course of their service, including strong communication skills, teamwork, and dedication.
First celebrated in 2017, National Hire a Veteran Day was created by Dan Caporale, a former Marine who’s also the founder of Hire Our Veterans. National Hire a Veteran Day was most recently observed on July 25, 2024.
Regardless of the time of year, WWP’s Warriors to Work program aims to provide veterans with the resources to find meaningful employment and achieve independence and financial security. Recognizing that every person has different needs, Warriors to Work offers a variety of services, including career counseling, resume-writing assistance, and interview preparation.
Warriors to Work also places veterans and their family members in jobs through its relationships with companies and organizations. Employers that value the hiring of veterans are encouraged to register with Warriors to Work. In doing so, they benefit from education and resources that allow them to more easily identify and hire qualified veterans.
Among the companies that have partnered with Warriors to Work is CSX. A national transportation provider, CSX makes it a point to prioritize the hiring of veterans, with one in five of its employees having served in the military. Through relationships with companies like CSX, Warriors to Work placed more than 1,700 injured veterans and their family members in new positions in fiscal year 2022.
