For more than a century, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) have aimed to uplift young people around the country by providing a safe space where they can participate in activities, learn, and find a stable environment. The organization allows young people to find inspiration and become inspiring individuals themselves. To highlight the accomplishments of its members, BGCA hosts the Youth of the Year program to recognize children and young adults who excel in the community.

What Is Youth of the Year?

Youth of the Year’s history spans seven decades. The program recognizes young people who have achieved great things over the past year. It considers displays of leadership, service, academic achievement, and healthy practices. Annually, one exceptional young person earns the title of National Youth of the Year. Previous winners have gone on to accomplish even more professionally and personally.

How Is Youth of the Year Selected?

To be considered for the National Youth of the Year title, young people must first participate in their local Youth of the Year programs hosted by their community’s Club. If they win the local title, they advance to a state program and a regional program. The programs eventually narrow the field down to just six teens from across the country to compete for the national title.

What Does Youth of the Year Do?

Once named National Youth of the Year, the winning Club member acts as a representative and ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. They work to inspire all 4.6 million Club members, acting as an advocate and role model to each of them while continuing to pursue success in whatever professional career they choose.
