In 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) launched Go Red for Women to address the growing health crisis of heart and cardiovascular disease in women. Heart and cardiovascular disease impact the lives of nearly 500,000 women every year, making it a top killer for nearly half the population of the United States.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among women of all ages through several programs, including Woman of Impact and Teen of Impact.

Program Overview

The Woman of Impact and Teen of Impact initiatives act as a method for raising awareness of cardiovascular conditions that directly affect women of all ages while also raising awareness across age groups. They call on women to work within their communities and reach their friends and neighbors with a message about prevention. These individuals also develop fundraising opportunities to support research and prevention campaigns.

How Nominees Are Chosen

Organizations, individuals, and even chapters of the American Heart Association nominate select women and teens to represent the program. These nominees recruit volunteers to help them create programs that will benefit their community. These programs incorporate awareness campaigns as well as local fundraising events.

Award Winners

The campaigns take place over two months between February and April. Each nominee competes to make the biggest impact on their community by either sharing a successful awareness drive or raising the most money for charitable activities. The nominee that comes out on top wins the Woman of Impact Award or Teen of Impact Award. However, all nominees are celebrated for their efforts and contributions to the cause.
